The pedagogue Lorenzo Luzuriaga, Spanish representative of the New School Movement, studied the illiteracy of Spain as a national phenomenon. The objective of the work is to point out the limits, distribution, and evolution of the illiteracy, from the geographic and personal (age, sex, profession, and economic situation) perspectives from 1860 until 1920. He also briefly comments on some of its main causes. The author does not deal with the methods to fight against such illiteracy in Spain.
Luzuriaga was the Editor in chief of the "Revista de Pedagogía" (Pedagogical Journal), instrument and channel for the dissemination of the ideas of the New School Movement in Spain. His wife, María Luisa Navarro largely collaborated in the journal.
Note: The publication of this work has been authorised by the daughter of Lorenzo Luzuriaga, Isabel Luzuriaga Navarro.
