The nature of caricatures it that it takes a firm stand on what it values. But just this reduction to the essential is its core – a balanced caricature would be a contradiction in itself. Therefore, this genre often is instrumentalized. To analyze this instrumentalization is one of the purposes of historical-educational research: Who becomes degraded, and for what reason?


On the other hand, caricatures are a means to criticize injustice and power, which often leads to censorship (see example).


In any case, it is necessary to interpret caricatures with the help other sources (factual information), to classify them in their historical context, and to include different perspectives. Old caricatures in particular cannot be understood without having a certain background knowledge.
