Where to Find The Sources

Over the last century, the diversity of image carriers and the reproduction possibilities of images have increased technically to the extent that finding images is not particularly problematic.

All kinds of archives (state archives, city archives, company archives, newspaper archives, etc.) possess an images section.

Museums have always been reliant on visual portrayals. As education is a process that takes place on a large scale and which leaves a lasting imprint on an individual’s life, the effect is significant even within the personal sphere.

Photograph albums of pupils, parents and teachers reveal hidden treasures of illustrative material depicting anything but the institutional and administrative side of school life. Private photograph albums are also a treasure trove with regard to other aspects relating to education, such as the topic of ‘histourism’.

It is especially possible to extend the source basis from the viewpoint of the present with pictorial sources. New images can be produced for the purpose of education orientated towards taking action.

Contrasting old photographs of historical rituals and spaces with the relevant activities and their locations in the present allows us to identify change with a high level of specificity and description.
