School Textbooks in Italy - EDISCO

The history of the school subjects in modern and contemporary - Developed by University of Turin - Italy

 [http://www.history-on-line.eu/edisco/default.aspx]

Edisco is the electronic data base of the Italian textbooks. Its aim is to build a catalogue of scholastic and educational books edited in the country between the XIX and the XX century, founding them both in libraries and antiques and modern repertories.

The aim of Edisco-for-HOL is to investigate the birth and the development of the school subjects in modern and contemporary Italy, by exploring the history of the textbooks in two directions:

  • horizontal: that means finding out and analysing all the school books produced in Piedmont (the region around Turin) between 1815 and 1861, when the Piedmont’s model of school was extended to all Italy with the unification of the nation;
  • vertical: that means finding out and analysing all the history textbooks for the secondary schools produced in Italy between 1861 and 1945, exploring the birth of the history as a subject in the schools of the unified Italy.

Edisco-for-HOL is a project of the Universities of Turin and Macerata.

This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
