History textbooks in Turkey (1908-1940) - Developed by Fath University - Turkey

There is no doubt that history textbooks are quite valuable historical sources. In many countries history textbooks have become tools for extreme nationalism, political indoctrination, promotion of cultural and national identity and high moral values. Through the selection of “significant” materials and themes, and the creation of “authorized” version of history, objectivity in history textbooks is easily lost and subjectivity is inevitable.

Despite the high level epistemological fragility, history textbooks allow future generations to study the official ideology and the accepted values and ideas of a particular period. This database encloses a selection from the Turkish history textbooks published between 1908 and 1940.
