The Essay "Gender Identitites and political Power in Francoist School textbooks (1940-1975)" has been developed by the National Workgroup of Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia - UNED (click here to access the information on the Workgroup). The Essay deals with how school textbooks contributed to the construction of national individual and collective feminine and masculine identities through their contents (text, images, and paratext) and with the mechanisms which were employed to transmit the ideological message and maintain the political structure of power. A textual and iconographic study of contents is carried out. E-writing History on-line emerges as an ideal opportunity to include the analysis of iconographic content combined with text. It will be based on school textbooks as primary sources, and legislative documents together with bibliography as secondary sources. The Essay will contain links to a variety of tools in the portal of the project: websites, classics, and manuals from the MANES virtual library.
